The Onion Lamp
furniture design
This piece of furniture was designed as part of a collaborative university project. With the mandatory concept of "an onion", we designed and constructed our interpretation of this brief, as a practical yet visually striking item, exploring notions of layers, translucency and change.
Actually a side table, the "Onion Lamp" is so named for it's dual existance. Folded polycarbonate 'petals' pivot about a central axis, also concealing the light fitting, and radiate out as a stunning exhibition of glowing light. On more mundane days, they slide neatly within the timber veneered table top, existing as a practical coffee table.

A striking piece of furniture, the Onion Lamp was a rewarding to create as it is to behold.
